After a career in the Royal Navy serving as aircrew in various helicopter roles including Search and Rescue, Steve joined HM Coastguard and spent 30 wonderful years in all areas of Coastguard work. This included many years at the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination centre at Falmouth co-ordinating incidents from Perranporth to Peru. Steve was awarded the MBE in 2010 for services to Search and Rescue both nationally and internationally.
The Boscastle Flooding 16th Aug, 2004.
Steve will give a brief of the thoughts and actions of a major flooding incident at the height summer of 2004, initially co-ordinated by Falmouth Coastguard.
HM Coastguard has a long and proud tradition of stepping into action at a moments notice.
The storms of Monday 16 August 2004 saw three weeks worth of rain fall in one day. The resulting water began to be funnelled down the valleys surrounding Boscastle and soon the steep roads became rivers. By the time that the water reached the picturesque village, it had picked up enough momentum to become a raging torrent, sweeping into buildings; washing cars away and felling huge trees.
