In this presentation, Andrew Putt, who was the full-time lifeboat coxswain at the Lizard Lifeboat Station, will provide an in-depth overview of his role and responsibilities. As the leader of a lifeboat crew at one of the UK’s southernmost stations, Andrew will discuss the operational aspects of responding to emergency calls, known as “shouts,” and the various challenges encountered during these missions.
He will share specific examples of rescue operations, detailing the weather conditions typical of the Lizard Peninsula, including high winds, rough seas, and low visibility. The talk will cover the technical and navigational skills required to manage a lifeboat crew in these demanding environments, as well as the decision-making processes involved in ensuring the safety of both the crew and those in distress.
This presentation will offer insight into the practical challenges of lifeboat operations and the logistical considerations behind maritime search and rescue efforts.
(Club open from 7pm – talk starts at 7.30pm)
